VOLUME 016 - SICILIAN PROVERBS TO GET YOU THRU THE DARK 🌌

Everyday at midnight I'm reminded that it's only 6:00 pm. I never remembered the sun going down so soon in previous years. It has to be a 2020 thing, I'm sure. Then, I'm reminded of the Sicilian proverb:

Chiù nniuri ri mezzannotte nun pò fari
I

“It can’t get any darker than midnight”

Things are going to get better. Hell, things are about to get real good if you like Sicilian wines. Keep reading...

Three of the four wines are Vite ad Ovest which made an underground appearance here a few months ago. Made from ancient vines on the western part of the Sicily in Marsala. A family run winery doing things right with no added chemicals or SO2 at bottling. Very interesting wines you're bound to love.

Vite ad Ovest - Vurgo - 2019

Made 100% naturally with no SO2 from 40-50 year old 80% cataratto and 20% grillo. This is a light orange wine with 2 days of maceration. Peachy, citrusy and hints of the Sicilian almond!

Vite ad Ovest - Bianco - 2019

Not as Bianco as the Vurgo - it's actually orange. 15 days using cataratto and grillo - I'm curious what you'll like better. It's the same grapes, spontaneously fermetted - but, with more time on skins that results in a more textural, aromatic expression. Taste them side-by-side for a real trip.

Vite ad Ovest - Ghammi - 2019

The most important grape in Sicily - this Nero d'avola is fresh, light and very juicy.  Red cherries, strawberries and some floral components. This has Glug Klubbin' written all over it.

Marabino - Don Paulo - 2018

Probably the least Glug Klubby of the bunch - does not mean this wine is not  super delicious, biodynamic and natural. I've been enjoying some bigger, deeper wines with my long nights as of late. Marabino is another family run winery that does Nero d'avola in a completely different way than the Nero above. Located in the south-eastern part of the island, Marabino produces 100,000 bottles of wine and 2,000 bottles of olive oil each year. This wine is elegant and graceful, with big noses of dark red fruits and currants. Silky smooth.
